Troia ruins 30 km. to the south, approximately 4.5 km from the coast. The ancient city was declared as a National Park in 1996 and in 1998 it was included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

The importance of Troia is that Homer was the scene of the Trojan War that he described in the Iliad Epic. The Epic of Iliad includes a small part of the myth of the Trojan War. The first systematic excavation of the prehistoric period in Anatolia began in Troia. The excavations were carried out by Schliemann in 1870 for the first time in 1893-94. The homeland of the famous poet Homer Iliad and Odysseia in Izmir, the homeland of Troas and Troia, which has a history of thousands of years, is near the village of Tevfikiye in Çanakkale. This is now known as Hisarlık.
